INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — U.S. Coast Guard officials are searching the ocean off southern Indian River County for people who may have been in a 23-foot boat that was found washed ashore about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
It isn’t know whether anyone was aboard the boat, named Shorty Perdue, which was found about 10 miles north of the Fort Pierce Inlet, Petty Officer Michael Cote said at 5:30 a.m.
Before the boat washed onto the beach, three people were seen fishing in it, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office’s report.
The Coast Guard is still trying to confirm that. The investigation is ongoing.
A Coast Guard boat and a helicopter were searching the area Wednesday morning. “We don’t know if anyone is missing,” Cote said. “It is standard operating procedure to search if a boat washes up on the beach.”
Cote said the boat had a hull number, but it had not been reported stolen. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the vessel had been abandoned, either.
